Thousands of beans picked for charity Continued from page 1 Over the past two weeks around 2000 purple beans have been picked, including 1132 from Sunday. Red Cross service coordinator Gayle Chambers, with the help of volunteer gardeners John Whitehead and Allan Young, were tasked with the harvest and says there are still more to be picked yet. “By the time all the beans are harvested, I predict the garden would have produced
around 4000 beans,” Gayle smiles. What Gayle likes about the purple beans is that they are ‘prolific growers and non-stringy’, and will keep fresh longer. “Most people like beans and these are great keepers, which means they don’t have to be sent out to families immediately by the Foodbank,” she says. The garden plot is home to a huge array of vegetables and is lovingly tended by
John and newcomer Allan. It was originally taken care of by Gayle alone after starting it up three years ago. “It’s great to have the help now and John has done such a wonderful job with it,” she says. “The whole theory behind this garden was that who ever tended it could take what ever they wanted from it, then pass the rest of it on. “It works well and it’s great to know that many people are benefiting,” she says.

Robins let loose at Kaipupu Point By Cathie Bell About 24 South Island Robins were released at Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary yesterday afternoon, in a move chairman Barry Maister hopes will see kiwi make their home there too. About 100 sanctuary volunteers, local iwi representatives, sponsors, invited guests and local school children gathered to celebrate the longawaited release of South Island Robin yesterday. Kaipupu Point Chairman, Barry Maister, is excited about what the translocation means. “The arrival of the South Island Robin is the result of years of hard work, tireless commitment to the cause and a coming together of community to create something really special that Picton can be proud of. “We can now start planning for more translocations such as rifleman, saddleback and most exciting of all, kiwi.”

The robins have come from Long Island, not far from Ship’s Cove, at the
entrance to Queen Charlotte Sound. The capture team were led by the
Department of Conservation, along with experts engaged by Kaipupu Point Committee member Peter Hamill, including Bill Cash, Peter Gaze and Dr Katrina Hale, accompanied by an enthusiastic and skilled team of volunteers. It is expected around 30 – 40 birds would be released onto the Sanctuary. South Island Robin are small song birds who inhabit all levels of the forest but predominantly forage on the forest floor. This means that they are particularly vulnerable to predation and the success of the translocation will be dependent on constant vigilance by the Kaipupu Point pest monitoring team. The new arrivals are one of New Zealand’s friendliest native birds. They are expected to enhance the visitor experience with their bird song and familiarity with people.

Councillors back paddling pool loss By Cathie Bell Council staff will keep Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse statues on the Picton waterfront when the paddling pool is removed, but the resting place for the pool’s commemoration plaque has yet to be decided. After a short discussion at last Thursday’s council meeting, Marlborough District councillors agreed to remove the paddling pool and to spend an extra $183,848 on top of a $115,000 bequest by Christchurch man Clifford Hague to build a “zero depth water-play feature” in its place. While they hope to move the Donald Duck statue to another place, there was no discussion on plans to remember the family who paid for the pool to be built 62 years ago. The paddling pool was built in 1954, paid for by Maria Card in memory of her father Alfred
Thomas Card, publisher of the first newspaper in Marlborough. Alfred Thomas Card owned the Marlborough Press, and was also a bookseller and stationer. The Press was Picton’s paper from 1861 until 1949. Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett says the pool’s features would be preserved. Donald and Mickey will be part of the new water feature planned for the foreshore, she says. An “interpretation project” setting out the foreshore’s history will be designed, including the pool plaque and others from the “plenty of donated community funded projects” in that area, Rosie says. Councillor Trevor Hook says the new water feature would add vibrancy to the foreshore and fix the problems the paddling pool has. “What happens to Donald Duck? Hopefully it will stay on the fore-

By Cathie Bell A large yellow slide and a swing recovered by police after drug raids in Blenheim and Picton has been returned to the Marlborough District Council. Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett says the slide and swing were taken from Burleigh Park in Blenheim in December 2014. The Burleigh Park slide was replaced by the council, at a cost of more than $4000. Rosie says the recovered one

Three people are facing charges after Marlborough Police executed search warrants at addresses in Blenheim and Waikawa on Wednesday. During the searches Police recovered methamphetamine, cannabis, 24 firearms and a large amount of stolen property includ-
ing the children’s slide which was found in bush near cannabis plants. Two firearms were also located in bush close to cannabis plants. The property recovered includes: motorcycles, a log splitter, concrete saw, tig welder, ride on lawnmower, generator, quad bike, chainsaws, commercial diesel heater, dingy, outboard motors, plumbing equipment and tools. Prevention Sergeant Mike Porter said methamphetamine users
often supported their habit by offending and that impacted on the wider community. “We know that most of the dishonesty offending we deal with can be linked to the use of methamphetamine,” he said. Two men both aged 35 years are in custody and will appear in the Marlborough District Court next Monday. A 25 year old woman has been released on bail and will appear in the Blenheim District Court on 14 March.

‘Sea week’ off to a clean start The Waikawa Dive Centre organized a “clean up” dive in Waikawa Bay as part of the celebration of Sea Week this week. Waikawa Dive Centre manager Kate Trayling says while Sunday’s dive covered only a small portion of Waikawa Bay, “we can now say the western shore is much cleaner than before”. There were 29 people in five boats in the dive, including scuba and snorkel divers and required boat crew to haul the rubbish on board, she says. “The operation went without a hitch. We managed to spread the divers out along the dive area and the snorkelers worked the shallows and the scuba divers went to about 10 metres.” After an hour’s dive the divers had collected a few

Zoe, 14 years old, finished her diving course late last week, and she bought her diver dad and mum along, she says. “Everyone was pleased with the effort and it’s not until you put all the collected rubbish together that you realize the volume you have collected.” She says the Waikawa Dive Centre hosts about three rubbish dives a year, including on Earth Day in April and another spring-clean dive in September. “Anyone’s welcome to come along and help with these dives and if anyone knows where there is rubbish underwater to collect, then call Waikawa Dive Centre and they shall organize a dive to clean it up.”

Paddling pool Dear Ed, The history of the Memorial Paddling Pool in Picton was that in June 1954, the Picton Progress and Beautifying Society recommended to the Picton Borough Council that the £300 left in the Will of the late Miss Maria Veronica Card, Mr Card’s eldest daughter, be used for a suitable memorial to her father, the late Mr Alfred Thomas Card, and it should take the form of a children’s paddling pool on the Foreshore. It was also recommended that the pool should be 30ft x 30ft x 14 inches, with a suitably inscribed brass plaque installed at the base of the pool. However, the Memorial to Alfred Thomas Card was not erected until September 1954. Mr Card was the proprietor of the “Marlborough Press,” which was Picton’s newspaper from 1861 to 1949, he was also a bookseller and stationer. As well as being one of Picton’s memorials, the paddling pool is very popular with young mothers and their children. Surely the renovation of the old pool to bring it up to standard would be cheaper than the $482,698 (as mentioned in the “Sun,”) for a new water feature. The Marlborough District Council seems set on destroying Picton’s Memorials, as it was even looking at moving Picton’s War Memorial at the entrance to Seymour Garden’s on the Foreshore which was built to the memory of those fallen in World War I and II. As for “Donald Duck,” I believe some of those who built Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse still live in Picton. This memorial was in memory of A.T. Card, a local, and as such should remain, perhaps with some renovations, as suggested by Mrs Carmody. Mike Taylor

Building memories of family life Children’s Day is to be celebrated in Marlborough on March 6 this year. Cathie Bell talks to Barnardos child and family services co-ordinator Jodie Griffiths about what that means.
It’s the memories of things you do together that your children remember, and Marlborough’s Children’s Day celebrations are an opportunity to build some fun memories together. Barnardo’s Jodie Griffiths is one of the team organising Children’s Day at Brayshaw Park on Sunday morning, on behalf of the Marlborough Violence Intervention Project. Up to 7000 people are expected to attend the day, targeting children from three to 15. Jodie says Children’s Day is a good chance to have an enjoyable day out with children or grandchildren, without spending a lot of money. The celebrations start at 10am, and the free activities include messy play, bouncy castles, interactive challenges such as juggling, creative and craft activities, as well as teen water fun. Jodie says there will be limited food to buy onsite including sausages, apples and popcorn, and families are encouraged to bring their own picnic food and blankets. A national event, Children’s Day has been held in Marlborough for many years, she says. “It’s a day acknowledging how great children are.” Jodie has been with Barnardos for seven years, covering several roles. “I do the programme delivery for children and women who’ve experienced family violence, I do supervised contact for parents, and another programme to get under-fives

involved in early childhood education. “I’ve also been involved with the Active Dads programme in the past four years, which encourages dads to do more things with their children.” Barnardos works with children of any age, Jodie says, but it also runs the Incredible Years programme on the three to eight year olds. “You can do so much at that age. Your
strategies as a parent can be so great. You can build a good relationship as a foundation for the teenage years.” At Barnardos Marlborough, the particular focus is on proactively spending time with your children, the most important thing you can do, Jodie says. “That’s our foundation – from every angle you come from, it’s about strengthening that relationship, that is key.” Things can get in the way of that relation-
ship, ranging from the pressures of work to stresses from illhealth and other pressures. “We see things that sometimes difficult birth can affect the relationship. “In Marlborough, a lot of people live here without support, they can find those early years really difficult and can affect that parent-child relationship.” Women are sometimes better at building social arrangements to get out with their children and mix with others, so Barnardos offers the Active Dads programme in Marlborough to help fathers to build those arrangements. “Active Dads is a really low key programme, we set it up so it’s easy for dads to spend really child-focused time with their kids. “Often dads come home on Friday from work, they need to do chores on Saturday, plan to do something with the kids on Sunday, but you get busy and before you know it, it’s Sunday night. “We get Dads to try places out with their kids, find them places to do things together, and to get comfortable being there. “As women, we’re predominantly social, made to mix. Men can be a bit different.” This Sunday’s Children’s Day is another one of those activities to leave the house and get out with the children to do things together. “You don’t want to be in the situation where you look back and say I had well-presented house and garden, but have no memories of family life to look back on.”

Four Bernese Mountain dogs met for a mini reunion on the banks of the Taylor River at the Beneful Bark in The Park event on Sunday. Dad George, mum Nadia and their son and daughter, Kido and Lerryn, soaked up the sun at the popular event. And with a doggy dress up booth, agility course, splash zone and the chance to try out a Go Pro there was plenty for all the four-legged friends to do. Hundreds of furry friends of all shapes and sizes made the most of the annual event which attracted around 500 visi-
tors. Jess Shaw from the Beneful event team says the event was a huge success with lots of canine capers making it a hit with all who attended. “This was the first year we have run a Go Pro Station. “Basically the dogs wear a Go Pro camera for 10 minute slots so we can see things from a dog’s point of view. “All the footage will be edited to make a film for Facebook. “Blenheim dogs seemed to love the Go Pro so the video should be well worth a look.” RIGHT: Bill Green with his Taco Terrier Millie, who won the smallest dog category at the event
Sunny start to the year February was very sunny, with Blenheim making a good start to retain its sunshine capital title. Weather data collected by Plant and Food scientist Rob Agnew at the Grovetown Business Park shows last month was hot and sunny. The mean temperature was 20 degrees Celsius, 2.3 degrees above the long-term average temperature for February of 17.7 degrees. Last month was the second warmest February for Blenheim for the past 84 years, Rob says. The warmest February was in 1998. Last month’s 289.3 hours of sunshine is now the third sunniest February for the past 87 years. The sunniest February is 1968, with 298.0 hours.

Council plan out for comment The Plan also shows Council budgets are in an even stronger position than indicated last year, he says. “Ratepayers can see that our original long term planning was very conservative and that, as we have managed our capital spending on projects at a slightly slower speed, debt levels are lower and the rates outlook is well down. It’s a very satisfactory outcome. “Holding the rates increase down around 2 per cent while also funding some investment across the region is a real achievement and I hope ratepayers see that.” Alistair says he hopes councillors are not engulfed in more
requests for further spending during the Annual Plan submission process. The draft plan shows that, in the longer term, 2019-20 is the only year where rates are projected to rise above the Council’s self-imposed rates cap and that is due to the financing arrangements for the Flaxbourne Irrigation Scheme. However, that irrigation scheme does not have any financial impact on any ratepayer other than those who sign up to it, Alistair says. A new rate set at $1 a hectare on Flaxbourne landowner members, allowing Council to recover its costs for the scheme, is outlined in the Annual Plan.

Councillors have opted to put out for consultation a new combined water rate for 2017-18. “It’s a philosophical question; we all believe that everyone should have access to fresh water but are we prepared to share the cost? By Cathie Bell Marlborough District Councillors have produced a draft Annual Plan for 2016-17 which, if it wins final approval, would see an increase of 2.2 per cent in total rates and charges levied across the district. Before that happens, people can have their say on the draft annual plan, and lobby for new funding and projects. People can put in submissions now until Monday May 9. Those submissions will be heard and considered by councillors, with the draft Annual Plan finalised in June and the new rates set for the 2016-17 year. Marlborough Vintners Hotel on Rapaura Road is home to the Vintners Room Restaurant, and is revered for its bold, eclectic menu and exceptional service. The star of the Hotel’s restaurant is the menu, an inspiring mix of fresh Marlborough produce and garden vegetables and herbs grown onsite. Every dish is rounded off with a European twist, passionately plated by head chef David Haase and his team. David who hails from Germany was professionally trained under Michelin star chefs prior to coming to New Zealand, and continues to pour every ounce of his talent into every dish. The restaurant is open seven days a week and most certainly to the public, says Marlborough Vintners Hotel general manager Travis Moriarty. “While we are frequented by tour groups and visitors to the region, we do want the locals to know that the restaurant is open for evening dining and invite them to come out and try us for themselves if they haven’t already,” he says. The restaurant seats up to 40 people and

there is no pressure on diners to rush off after their meal. “We do one seating and leave it at that, we want our diners to have a relaxing and memorable experience,” Travis says. Outside the restaurant is another area where people can dine when the weather is nice, and of course there are two function rooms which can be booked for larger events. If it’s a day time visit you would prefer, the restaurant’s bar facility is open from 2:30pm and small plate dining is offered. To avoid disappointment bookings are encouraged. “We look forward to seeing you soon.”

Football fest
Two of the top teams in New Zealand will be playing in Blenheim this weekend, when Cashmere Technical play Miramar Rangers in a pre-season warmup game at A&P Park. The game starts at 2.30pm on Saturday. Marlborough Football general manager Andrea SmithScott encourages everyone to “come along and watch some great football!”.

Close racing order of the day As the Grand Prix hydroplanes blew engines and had mechanical issues, the massive fleet of clubman boats kept the large crowds entertained at the Rotoiti power boat clubs annual regatta at Lake Rotoiti over the weekend. The 17 Clubmans raced without incident with Blenheim’s James Blakiston in Blast Off winning three races over the weekend. However, he came second in the South Island junior clubman title

Fishy fun at competition Story and photos by Celeste Alexander There were big smiles, friendly banter and plenty of fisherman’s tales being shared on Sunday during the Renwick Arms Country Club’s Family Fishn’ Competition event. All ages arrived to Sunday’s weigh in armed with chilli-bins, trailers and ute loads of fish to enter in their competition catch. Even youngster Lucas Dickeson came in, tightly gripping a bag containing his little Spotty fish which he caught himself. His Spotty may have not been the biggest but his enthusiasm was. Entries such as a large 3.4 kg crayfish drew a lot of attention, but as all fishing stories go it wasn’t as big as the one that ‘got away’, says diver Ryan Phillips. “This is nothing compared to another one I missed,” he grins. Spear fisherman Devon Payne hauled in a large Skate and a number of sharks to enter, while Kylie Austin was proud to show off her first ever Kingfish which weighed
Star Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon and his co-driver John Kennard, a former Blenheim man, head to Mexico’s World Rally Championship event this week. Fresh from a career-best equalling second place at Rally Sweden in their New Generation i20 World Rally Car (WRC), Paddon and Kennard are looking forward to the gravel surface of Rally Mexico (3-6 March) and to furthering their knowledge of this tough, hot rally. Paddon heads to Mexico fourth equal with Hyundai Motorsport team-mate Dani Sordo in the WRC drivers’ championship. With 399 competitive kilometres over 21 stages, Rally Mexico crosses the Sierra de Lobos and Sierra de Guanajuato mountain ranges.

Club manager and competition organiser Alan Ferguson was more than thrilled with the competition’s turnout, and says it got a ‘whole lot bigger’ this year.
“We had 227 entries this year, 60 more than last year. What was a $7000 competition prize pool quickly grew to $10,000. “We had 52 adults and 175 children enter this year and we are over the moon,” he says.
